Artikelbeschreibung

Stan Getz – Big Band Bossa Nova

The "Big Band Bossa Nova", released by Verve in 1962, is part of a whole series of Brazilian-influenced albums by Stan Getz (1962 "Jazz Samba", 1963 "Jazz Samba Encore!", 1964 "Getz / Gilberto"), whereby on the album produced by Creed Taylor and arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland, he surprised the listener by embedding his tenor saxophone in big band arrangements. For the session recorded in New York in August 1962, Stan Getz and guitarist Jim Hall, trumpeter Doc Severinsen, bassist Tommy Williams and drummer Johnny Rae combined the rhythms of samba and bossa nova with orchestral arrangements. The repertoire draws on Brazilian compositions such as Luiz Bonfá's "Manhã de Carnaval" or Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes' "Chega de Saudade", as well as material by McFarland ("Balanço no Samba" or "Street Dance") and more.
